Treating Vertigo

Treating Vertigo

If you have been suffering from vertigo, you may be wondering if there is any treatment for this problem.  Whether you are resigned to living with vertigo, or are desperate for relief, you will be glad to hear that there are useful methods to treat vertigo.

The most important point to bear in mind is that to treat vertigo with successful results means finding the cause.  Vertigo is not generally a condition in itself–  it coexists with other medical conditions.  Successfully treating vertigo means treating the underlying conditions as well.

One common example is an inner-ear infection.  A bad cold, or upper-respiratory infection, may have resulted in the inner-ear becoming infected.  Inner-ear infections, especially if they are not treated promptly, can lead to vertigo.  In these instances, one would need antibiotics to clear up the infection.  The vertigo would likely respond to Dramamine, which is often given for motion sickness, or its generic counterparts.

Problems with blood circulation, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions are often associated with vertigo.  While some of the underlying conditions are serious and others are relatively minor, it is not enough to attempt to treat vertigo without addressing the underlying conditions.

In many cases, vertigo can be successfully treated.  In some cases, it can be eliminated entirely.  Knowing its cause is the first step.  No matter how severe or annoying your dizzy spells have become, you should never try to treat vertigo on your own.  The reason for this is that while you are attempting to use home remedies, the underlying condition can worsen.  While a home remedy may or may not provide some degree of relief, it is essential to address its cause.  Your physician is your best source of advice.  With a proper medical evaluation, he can determine the cause of your vertigo, and address both problems at the same time.
