Organic Supplements

Are you taking any supplements?  There is a huge variety of different supplements types that you can buy through retail, online, or mail order sources.   But one thing to think about is whether the supplements that you are putting into your body are organic or not.  You could just make the assumption that any supplement you take would automatically  be either “natural” or an organic supplement by nature, but that is not necessarily the truth.  It might surprise you to find out that a lot of the supplements in the marketplace are  actually synthetic.  Even when you are looking at organic supplements, you might see some that are labeled as  “certified organic”  Do you know what that means? Are there some supplements that are  organic but have not been certified?  And who is  in charge of doing the certification?

The definition of organic is as follows: “Organic agriculture is an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.” Something that is  “certified organic” refers to the fact that the ingredients were grown in accordance with very strict and uniform standards that have undergone verification by an independent state organization or a private organization. Certification includes the inspection of the fields and facilities used for processing, a detailed process for recordkeeping, as well as testing of the soil and water conditions to make sure that farmers and processors are following the standards that have been established.

Over the last few years, the sale of organic supplements has  increased quite a bit,  which has helped out a sector that has seen an overall decrease.  But why would there be such clamor for these organic whole food supplements?  If you are going to take a supplement to benefit your health, then you want to know what you are putting in your body to ensure it is natural and doesn’t contain any substances that could be harmful to your body.  To many, the thought of a organic whole food supplement is rather appealing.
